Easy Edit Grub With Grub Customizer

Grub Customizer is a new graphical GRUB2 settings manager. For now, it only allows you to edit the GRUB2 menu entries: reorder, rename or add/remove entries. Since these are actually scripts which generate the boot.cfg file, Grub Customizer changes the actual script order and then generates a new boot.cfg so if you then run "sudo update-grub", your customization won't be overwritten.
Grub Customizer comes with an Ubuntu PPA (the first packages have been uploaded only a few minutes ago) so to install it in Ubuntu (Lucid, Maverick, Natty), use the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:danielrichter2007/grub-customizer
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install grub-customizer

Canonical retires Shipit

Canonical have announced that they will be discontinuing the free CD shipping service Shipit.
Writing on the Canonical blog Ubuntu‘s Gerry Carr said that the company would instead focus on their CD distributor programme and shipping CDs directly to LoCos – Local Ubuntu community teams – instead.

A brief history of Shipit

Shipit distributed Ubuntu CDs free of cost to those who requested them.
Primarily aimed at enabling users with low or non-broadband download speeds, the server shipped millions of CDs worldwide to people who weren’t able to download it themselves and made millions of people, like me, discover Ubuntu.

So, what happens now?

Starting with 11.04, users will no longer be able to order free CDs, but CDs will continue to be provided to approved LoCos through a Shipit-like programme.
CDs will remain available for users to buy from the Canonical store, or, as has always been the case, the option of burning your own for duplication and distribution exists.
Gerry also hinted that Canonical would be launching cloud based free online trial service. This would likely be similar to that already offered by the Edubuntu project.

How to create your own QR Codes in Ubuntu

A QR code (short for Quick Response) is a specific matrix barcode (or two-dimensional code), readable by dedicated QR barcode readers and camera phones. The code consists of black modules arranged in a square pattern on a white background. The information encoded can be text, URL or other data.
Common in Japan, where it was created by Toyota subsidiary Denso-Wave in 1994, the QR code is one of the most popular types of two-dimensional barcodes. QR is the abbreviation for Quick Response, as the creator intended the code to allow its contents to be decoded at high speed.
The technology has seen a large uptake in Japan and South Korea. However, in the west there has been a considerably slower adoption of QR Codes.

How can I create a QR code in Linux?

The creation of QR codes in Ubuntu is simple, albeit command-line based. You will need to install ‘qrencode‘ from the Ubuntu Software Center - you can click here to install it or search for ‘qrencode’ manually.

Once Qrencode has been successfully installed you can create QR codes using the Terminal and the following command :
  • qrencode -o [filename.png] ‘[text/url/information to encode]‘
To create a link to the Google homepage with the output file called ‘google.png’ and made in your homefolder  you would run :
  • qrencode -o blogcupu-newbie.png 'http://blogcupu-newbie.blogspot.com'
This outputs the following: -

You can make the ‘pixels’ used in the code bigger by using the ‘-s‘ argument. Let’s make the same QR code but with the square pixels increased to 6×6 and have the .png saved to our desktop- or any other directory :
  • qrencode -o ~/Desktop/blogcupu-newbie.png -s 8 'http://blogcupu-newbie.blogspot.com'

The new default wallpaper for Ubuntu 11.04 has been released.

The new default wallpaper for Ubuntu 11.04 has been released.

Sporting ‘subtle changes’ with ‘new light refractions’, the updated wallpaper for the April release echoes evolution rather than revolution.
Writing on the reasoning behind the subtle changes Ubuntu’s Otto Greenslade says :

“…as we move towards becoming more of a ‘household’ platform and with the great changes coming with Unity (launcher/dash) general users will get reassurance from the familiarity of the wallpaper and will also identify with it as part of our personality in new screenshots.”

For those unable to notice a different between this and the incumbent, here’s an animated .gif alternating between the two:

This design, along with 17 other wallpapers , make up the default wallpaper package for Ubuntu 11.04.

Phew! Nautilus-Elementary revived in time for Ubuntu Natty

Elementary’s Nautilus-fork ‘Nautilus-elementary’ has been revived – just in-time for Natty!

The project, which was announced as no longer being in development last November,  has proven incredibly popular with users of various distributions thanks to to its refined, uncluttered interface and themeable features.
Writing on his blog Nautilus-Elementary’s chief developer, ammonkey, gave his reasons for the revival:
“Like many other distributions, Ubuntu Natty won’t support gtk3 and the gnome3 stack without adding external/testing repositories. Since gtk3 dropped the rc format, only one gtk engine is ready for gtk3 (clearlook) and one gtk theme (adwaita). Without proper theming there’s no point rushing to gtk3/gnome3 so gtk2/gnome2  still has some nice months ahead before a progressive transition.
Considering the context and to provide the best experience for Jupiter, i decided to re-activate the nautilus-elementary project. A special up-to-date version of nautilus-elementary will be released soon. The 2.32.0 version [brought] many bugs which have been hunted down for this special release.”
Ammonkey goes on to state that “..only critical bugs in nautilus-elementary would be fixed for the moment”. As such users shouldn’t expect any new features.
An updated bug-fixed package for Maverick users along with a new version for Natty testers can be installed from the Nautilus-Elementary PPA @

To add and install via the Terminal enter:
  • sudo add-apt-repository ppa:am-monkeyd/nautilus-elementary-ppa
  • sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
